in the dance field
Seize the opportunity to examine contemporary dance from six distinct perspectives. Discover new performance techniques, and explore diverse methodologies with some of contemporary dance's most celebrated performers and teachers. Meet the artists, gain new insights, and watch the magic explode on stage. All programs are free and open to the public. Advance registration is required to participate. Observers are welcome, space permitting. The master class series is one of the residency activities conducted by companies performing on the Dance Celebration Series.

Paul Taylor is the last living member of the pantheon that created modern dance. At 80, he is still acclaimed for the relevance and power of his current work as well as his classics. Experience the joy of dancing his style in Taylor phrases and combinations with live piano accompaniment.

The popular Parsons style is known worldwide for its speed, strength, humor, high-spirited athleticism and movement invention. This contemporary class includes a Parsons warm up followed by across-the-floor and center-floor combinations to live percussion. Participants will also learn choreographed phrases from the company's touring repertory.

Having grown up watching MTV, Larry Keigwin is famous for his pop sensibilities, quirkiness and unflinching showmanship. Named the artist in residence for the 2010 season of the Vail International Dance Festival, he was the associate choreographer for both the Radio City Rockettes and the off-Broadway musical The Wild Party. His contemporary technique class will combine the athleticism and virtuosity of the company's work with Keigwin's signature wit and humor.

Barnes & Company's style blends nuanced theatricality, explosive movement and individuality. The class begins with an easy to follow, fast-paced warm up which brings together an eclectic mix of modern techniques and highlights musicality and bold choices. The second part focuses on learning longer phrases, challenging participants to move with clarity, theatrical intention and full-bodied power, while having fun and developing one's personal performance quality.

Forty years ago Pilobolus exploded on the dance scene astonishing audiences with its eye-catching gymnastics and imaginative weightsharing collaborative approaches to dance making. This workshop is a model for the troupe's choreographic process. Understand how Pilobolus creates its magical works. The workshop begins with a warm up followed by improvisational structures and short choreographed exercises.

Aszure Barton has created works for Hubbard Street, American Ballet Theatre, Mikhail Baryshnikov, the National Ballet of Canada, Sydney Dance Company, and Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal. Her workshop explores her versatile movement vocabulary and original creative process. It will consist of a concise and enlivening warm up, followed by explosive movement deriving from existing choreographic works.
