“There’s more information in one minute of dance by Doug Varone than most choreographers manage to squeeze into far lengthier works.”
– The Boston Herald
Known for its extraordinary humanistic, versatile and virtuoso works, Doug Varone and Dancers is celebrating its 30th anniversary. A much sought after director, Varone is known for his work for opera, theater, dance, and film, which has appeared on stages worldwide earning him a Guggenheim Fellowship, an OBIE Award, and three Doris Duke Awards. The company will present ReComposed (2015) inspired by Joan Mitchell’s pastel drawing and Varone’s signature work Possession (1994) to music by Phillip Glass.
“This extraordinary troupe of dancers … displays the incredible dance talent and inspired choreography that has become Malpaso’s hallmark.”
Cuba is known for producing world-class dancers who can do anything from contemporary to classical to capoeira to Afro–Cuban. Malpaso will not disappoint when it makes its Philadelphia debut. The company will be premiering a brand new work by Aszure Barton, whose company was a big hit in Philadelphia a few years ago.
“The Trocks are a guaranteed hoot for people who know nothing of ballet and an absolute must for those who think they know the originals.”
– The Sydney Star Observer
For a night of uproarious fun, lots of laughter and great send-ups of classical ballet, no one can top the Trocks. These men in tutus and pointe shoes have technique, and can they dance. Of course it all depends on whether or not the diva prima ballerina consents to perform. This show is great for the entire family.
“the aesthetics of Jessica Lang Dance is pure gorgeousness…”
– Houston Press
A superstar on the rise two years ago when first presented on our series, local Philly talent Jessica Lang has realized all our expectations with recent commissions from The Kennedy Center and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Her work is astoundingly beautiful and emotionally moving. The program features all-new work including Thousand Yard Stare, a moving tribute to military veterans, and Her Door to the Sky based on the art of Georgia O’Keeffe. The power of dance to communicate raw feeling is never so evident.
“The crowd oohed and aahed, cheered mid-dance, gave standing ovations and generally seemed to adore every minute.”
– Denver Rocky Mountain News
This gem of a contemporary ballet company is known for its mix of American athleticism and European refinement. The Company also commissions works by top-notch choreographers exquisitely performed by its virtuoso dancers. ASFB brings the Philadelphia premiere of Silent Ghost by Spanish-born choreographer Alejandro Cerrudo.
