The Artist to Artist Series are master classes taught by some of today’s most celebrated dancers, choreographers and teachers performing on the NextMove Series. Classes are designed for students and aspiring professionals in the dance field giving you the opportunity to study contemporary dance from seven distinct perspectives. Discover new performance techniques, explore diverse methodologies with some of today’s most celebrated performers, choreographers and teachers. Observers are welcome, space permitting.

NextMove Dance’s 2017–18 Artist to Artist Series

Conducted by world-class touring dance artists and designed for student and aspiring professionals in dance!

Experience the opportunity to study contemporary dance from eight distinct perspectives.  Discover new performance techniques, and explore diverse methodologies with some of today’s most celebrated performers, choreographers and teachers.   Meet the artists, gain new insights, and engage in their technical prowess. All programs are free. Advance registration is required to participate. Observers are welcome, space permitting. The master class series is one of the residency activities conducted by companies performing on the NextMove Dance Series.  This season we are thrilled to be partnering with Swarthmore College Dance Department, University of the Arts Dance Department, Philadanco and Koresh Dance Center.

Master Class in Contemporary Dance

Taught by Guillaume Gabriel, 1st Assistant and collaborator to Hervé Koubi, Artistic Director

Recommended for intermediate/advanced dancers 18 years and older

This French-Algerian troupe makes its Philadelphia debut with the full-length work, What the Day Owes to the Night fusing hip hop, contemporary and capoeira. The goal of this class to share with the students the way the company works, aspiring to give a meaning to the movements. Dance is not a succession of movements but a path we walk through. After a warm-up, we will explore several states of the body and phrases from the touring work that will be presented at the Prince Theater.

Paul Taylor Dance Company Master Class

Recommended for advanced/intermediate dancers

The goal of a master class is educational. Members of the dance community throughout the world are anxious to explore the various techniques and styles of dance that have shaped the dance profession. Paul Taylor’s impact on the field is indisputable. Class will focus on modern technique and basics of Taylor style, and culminate with students learning phrases from Arden Court and Esplanade.  Participants are encouraged to see a live dance performance by Paul Taylor Dance Company to enrich their studies.

Ronald K. Brown/Evidence Master Class

Taught by Ronald K. Brown, Artistic Director/Founder or Arcell Cabaug, Associate Artistic Director

Recommended for all levels of dancers 18 years of age and older

Classes begin center floor with an emphasis on alignment, rhythm and using the body to express ideas and themes; strength, prayer, and celebration. Classes for beginning/intermediate/advanced dancers start with meditation and floor work that includes stretching and mind body centering exercises. Center floor work or barre work includes alignment and the introduction of the various dance techniques that are incorporated in the vocabulary of Ronald K. Brown/ EVIDENCE, A Dance Company. Phrases across the floor use influences from the western modern dance as well as traditional and social dances from West Africa, the Caribbean and the US.

Master Class in Contemporary Technique

Recommended for intermediate/advanced dancers 18 years and older

BodyVox’s philosophy is that all movement can be dance. Join Ashley Roland as she leads the class through exercises and movement incorporating many techniques and styles of dance, mixing choreography, theater and BodyVox’s repertory from its touring show Urban Meadow. BodyVox’s sense of joy, humor, and discovery will be incorporated in this 90-minute class.

Master Class in Contemporary Technique

Recommended for advanced aspiring professional dancers 18 years and older

Recognized worldwide for its world-class repertory and virtuoso dancers Ballets Jazz de Montréal is one of Canada’s most treasured touring companies. The master class will begin with a warm-up providing students with insights to BJM’s training practice. Participants will learn excerpts from its touring repertory that may include works by Israeli choreographer Itzik Galili.

Master Class in Hip Hop

Taught by Honji Wang, Co-Artistic Director/Founder

Recommended for intermediate/advanced dancers

Company Wang Ramirez makes it Philadelphia debut performing Monchichi, a full-length duet work rooted in hip hop, contemporary dance, dance theater and martial arts. The class is built with an intensive training focus. Dancers should be highly motivated, and be ready to search for new expressions, leaving their comfort zone of mastered skills. Emphasis will be on the feeling and the aesthetic of each body, strengthening the ability to take into account inner and outer influences and partnering.

Master Class “Kinetic Spiral “by Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company

Taught by Nai-Ni Chen, Artistic Director and Greta Campo, Associate Artistic Director

Recommended for intermediate/advanced dancers 18 years of age and older

“Like visual poetry, Chen’s phrases, part exoskeletal rigidity, part boneless grace, embodied an epic dignity.” – (The Village Voice) Nai-Ni Chen’s unique technique and movement phrases from her repertory will be introduced in this workshop. “The Kinetic Spiral” centers around the exploration on a wide range of physically challenging, intricate movement ideas that combines the sensibility, delicacy, and flow of motion driven by the use of breath to the bold, energetic and athletic strength inspired by the common ground found in the martial arts and modern dance.

 

MOMIX* Friday, May 11, 2018 at 1–2:30pm

Master Class in Improvisation

Taught by Company Representative

Recommended for movers and performers of all skill levels 18 years of age and older

Have you wondered how MOMIX comes up with its mad mix of magic?  This master class will explore how MOMIX mines materials and includes a warm-up, guided improvisation and repertory phrases from MOMIX’s touring repertory under the direction of Moses Pendleton Founder/Artistic Director.  MOMIX members are part dancer, part athlete and part illusionist, so bring your physicality, a sense of humor and prepare for an adventure.
